The Society canceled as Netflix reverses previous season 2 renewal decision

In an unfortunate turn of events, Netflix has decided to reverse the season 2 renewal it previously handed out to its buzzy new drama The Society. 

As first reported by Deadline, the modern take on the Lord of the Flies has been officially canceled by the streaming service making it the first of what is sure to be several shows shuttered due to COVID-19. According to the report, The Society‘s production was severely impacted by COVID-19 leaving Netflix to make the difficult decision to cut its losses and reverse its plans for a second season.

Having been renewed for season 2 in summer 2019, the original hope was for season 2 to begin filming this summer with a fall 2020 premiere date eyed for the show’s sophomore run.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, a timeline for production has remained uncertain making it difficult to plan for the season and accommodate the availability of the show’s larger ensemble cast. Factor in budget increases due to COVID-19 and Netflix ultimately decided the cons outweighed the upside of continuing with plans for season 2.

In addition to reversing The Society‘s renewal, Deadline reports Netflix has also decided not to proceed with a second season of I Am Not Okay With This due to similar concerns.  At this time, it’s unknown whether any additional series might be in danger of having their runs cut short.

The Society season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
