Best Netflix documentaries: 16. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is a true crime documentary series that follows the story of Gabriel Fernandez, an eight-year-old from California who was abused and murdered by his parents.

Gabriel suffered months of abuse and was tortured before he was killed. Despite numerous reports and complaints to social services, they did not help Gabriel and did not remove him from the home, which allowed the abuse to continue.

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is really tough to watch. The levels of incompetence and negligence and pure evil in this story are unbelievable and sickening. I would not recommend this documentary to everyone.

Best Netflix documentaries: 15. Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich

Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich premiered on Netflix this spring. The docuseries is based on the book of the same name by James Patterson, John Connolly, and Tim Malloy.

The series focuses on the stories and accounts of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, who conned his way into becoming a billionaire and organized and ran a child sex trafficking ring with links to many powerful individuals.

Filthy Rich is not a documentary I’d recommend to everyone. There are many descriptions of the assaults that Epstein and others committed, and that will be triggering for many viewers.

The Epstein case has been in the news recently because of Epstein’s girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, has been arrested and charged for her role in the sex trafficking ring.
