We’re waiting until 2022 for The Crown season 5 to premiere.

Yes, there is a little bad news there. Instead of getting the fifth season, which will be the first with Imelda Staunton in the role of Queen Elizabeth II, in 2021, we’re going to have to wait an extra year.

It’s got nothing to do with the current health pandemic, according to Deadline. The plan has always been to hold off filming the fifth season. It’s nothing new since filming for the third season was held off for a while and we had to wait an extra year for it. The plan is due to the change over of cast.

The Crown season 5 production would need to start now

If 2021 was the goal for The Crown season 5, production on it would have had to start around about now. Of course, the current lockdown around the UK would have prevented that if there was even a plan to film anyway.

However, due to the multitude of locations and the change of cast, the producers opted to hold back from filming. Instead, filming will begin in June 2021, likely bringing the fifth season to Netflix at the end of 2022.

The good news is filming for The Crown season 6, which has recently been confirmed after at one point not happening, will be able to continue off the back of the fifth season filming. We should get that in 2023.

The Crown season 4 still planned for this year

There is some good news within all this bad. The Crown season 4 is still to premiere and isn’t going to be delayed. It’s going to arrive on Netflix later this year, about a year after The Crown season 3.

Filming on the fourth season wrapped just before the lockdown in the UK went into effect. The show is going through post-production virtually, which will take a little longer than normal but not enough to put the premiere behind.

However, the coronavirus pandemic did rob the cast of their farewell. This is the last season with Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter, and Ben Daniels in their roles.

The Crown season 5 will premiere on Netflix in 2022 at the earliest.
