The Office is leaving Netflix and moving to Peacock in January 2021

We’ve known The Office is leaving Netflix at the end of the year and moving to Peacock in 2021 for a while. Now, we know when that will happen for sure.

According to a report from Decider, The Office is leaving Netflix by the end of 2020 and joining Peacock in January 2021. Likely, Peacock will add the series on Jan. 1, 2021.

We expected that would be the case for The Office, and even wrote about The Office joining Peacock on Jan. 1, 2021. That seems to be the consensus, although Peacock has not confirmed that release date yet.

It appears many fans expected The Office to be added to Peacock on the launch day, which was July 15, and were surprised not to see the show available to stream. As the Decider report notes, it’s all about streaming rights, and Netflix has the exclusive streaming rights to the hit series until the end of 2020.

Likely, the series will be available to stream on Netflix until Dec. 31, 2020. Then, when the clock strikes midnight PT, the series will be removed from the streaming service and move to Peacock.

I can’t see why Peacock wouldn’t release the series as soon as possible. It’s the most popular show on Netflix, and it should be a huge draw to the new streaming service.

We’ve seen that happen for a bunch of other shows in the past. Friends was the most recent big show to leave Netflix on Dec. 31. The series didn’t jump to another streaming service, though. Instead, there was a big gap from when it was on Netflix until HBO Max launched at the end of May. Friends is now available to stream on HBO Max, exclusively, for the next several years.

It’s possible that The Office, and Friends for that matter, could be added to Netflix again in the future. All these streaming services have to pay for streaming rights, and right now, Friends and The Office are $500 million acquisitions, basically. That’s big money, and if the subscribers don’t add up, those streaming services will drop those shows.

I don’t know if or when that will happen, but I think we all know that Netflix is here to stay.

We’ll continue to remind you about The Office leaving Netflix. Stay tuned for more information about the show moving to Peacock!

At the time of publishing, you still have a few months to watch the hit series on Netflix!
