A loose end in Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard could point to a sequel

The hottest movie on Netflix right now is the Charlize Theron led film, The Old Guard. The film is being praised by audiences and critics alike as it currently has a fresh rating with both groups on Rotten Tomatoes.

Along with that praise is a loud outcry for a sequel. There will be some light spoilers here, but I would hope you aren’t reading about loose ends before watching the film.

At the end of The Old Guard, we see our team ask Copley to help them pick the cases that they are going to take on going forward before we get a big surprise.

Quynh, played by Van Veronica Ngo (Bright, Da 5 Bloods) shows up and likely shocked everyone who was watching. We learn during the movie that she was placed in an iron casket and thrown into the ocean over 500 years ago, so her appearance raises a lot of questions. Those questions (How did she get out? Is she mad? What does she want?) will likely be answered if The Old Guard does get a sequel.

I want to talk about another character. At the end of the movie, when Nile (Kiki Layne) has broken into Merrick’s lab to free her teammates, there is one character who was notably not killed.

When Nile breaks through the door and sees Andy, Booker, and the rest of the team, she’s shot in the back and turns to shoot the soldier who was after her. Immediately after that, the scientist, Dr. Meta Kozak (Anamaria Marinca), tries to stab her with a syringe, but Nile hits her in the head with the gun.

Yes, she hits her in the head, but she doesn’t shoot her. After the movie ends and we don’t see her again, I rewatched the scene to ensure I saw it correctly. After Nile hits the doctor in the head, you see her feet as she is laying behind a table and the assumption would be that she is unconscious. The team then leaves the room and not another shot is fired toward the scientist.

Another thing I noticed on the rewatch is that they left the samples that were collected from Joe and Nicky as well. They made sure to show us that many samples were collected so these samples not being taken or destroyed seems to be intentional.

Will Netflix make The Old Guard sequel?

If the people behind the film went in thinking that they may get a sequel, and potentially a trilogy, they would need to leave some things open-ended. Any sequel is going to need to address the Quynh situation, but there could also be room for the mad scientist to return. If not in the sequel then in the third film.

If I was writing the next two films, film two would center around Quynh. At the end of that film, I’d tease the scientist again. Perhaps show her over a table testing a new serum she’s developed on a mouse and we see the mouse come back to life after she kills it. The third movie could follow our team (Perhaps minus Andy depending on what happens in film two) fighting a new team or army of immortals that have been cooked up by Dr. Kozak.

This would make for an interesting issue to have to overcome and could perhaps lead Booker to the answers he was looking for in the first movie.

Did you notice any other loose ends that need to be tied up? The Old Guard is now streaming.
