Netflix movies: The Old Guard is the action movie you need to watch

Netflix’s newest big blockbuster movie, The Old Guard, is based on a comic book series written by Greg Rucka, and it’s a must-watch on Netflix right now. It was added to Netflix on Friday, July 10.

The Old Guard is about a team of immortal mercenaries who take on small battles during their infinite lifespan. The oldest immortal and leader of the pack, Andy (Charlize Theron), is roped into a new job with Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), and Nicky (Luca Marinelli). Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) assigns them the task of rescuing a group of kidnapped girls in South Sudan. But there is more to the job than what meets the eye. Andy realizes there are people in the world who know about the team and wish them harm.

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, Nile (KiKi Layne) is a young soldier who has a strange response to a fatal injury. She ends up as the newest addition of the immortal fighting team. Andy and Nile have a rocky start to their relationship. But they form a tighter bond when Pharma kidnaps two of their immortal friends. The villain of this story is Merrick (Harry Melling), who is the CEO of Pharma. Merrick wants to use immortal’s DNA to create lifesaving drugs.

The Old Guard is an action movie with some emotional undertones and superhero vibes. The dialogue falls flat at times, but the action scenes feel like they took notes from John Wick. The fighting choreography is phenomenal. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously by inserting medieval weapons into some fight scenes. The Old Guard isn’t too goofy, though. Between action shots, the story has some more emotional stories that we see through flashbacks.

Theron delivers a dependably strong performance. She effortlessly switches from warrior mode to motherly mentor. There wasn’t much character development, but maybe we’ll learn more about them if Netflix gives us a few sequels.

The entire cast is massively talented and their acting skills complement one another. Melling stands out as the villain. Many of you may recognize Melling as Dudley Dursley from the Harry Potter films. He does an excellent job of playing a heartless villain who is doing something evil in hopes of saving lives in the name of profit.

The Old Guard is an excellent watch if you crave a big blockbuster movie while stuck at home. The immortal team still has their humanity and point of view while taking part in big action sequences. It may not be on the same level as a Marvel movie, but it’s an interesting story. The characters will hopefully grow with additional films, which Netflix may give us if The Old Guard is a big enough hit. There is a set up for a sequel at the very end of the film.
