Warrior Nun ending explained: Who could Ava trust?
Breaking down the ending to Warrior Nun season 1
It’s official. We need Warrior Nun season 2 to happen. The cliffhanger at the end of season 1 left us on the edges of our seats.
But how did it all end? What did everything mean? More importantly, who could Ava trust?
The penultimate episode left us with Cardinal Duretti focused on becoming the next pope. He also sent the rejected sisters after the small group of warriors trying to get into the crypt that held the bones of the angel.
Ava had got through the 20-foot concrete wall (finding a Tarask stuck inside) and found out that there weren’t any bones in the Vatican crypt. It was Adriel himself.
Adriel’s true identity revealed
While inside the crypt, which turned out to be a prison, Ava learned Adriel’s true identity. He wasn’t an angel sent to Earth to save Areala.
He had phased through similar to the way Lilith was now able to phase. Tarasks were after him, so he placed the halo in Areala to keep it safe. She chose not to give it back, knowing Adriel’s secret.
It turns out men had trapped Adriel in the crypt in the Vatican. He says to harness his powers, but it turns out it’s more about protection. Ava bringing the halo to Adriel gave him a chance to get it back. At first, Ava considered giving him it so no more warrior nuns would die, but once she learned the truth, she couldn’t.
She used to halo’s energy to protect herself and would need seven minutes for it to recharge again. Fortunately, Sister Beatrice blew up the wall to the crypt and the small group saved Ava. It just meant that Adriel was now free.
Michael leaves Earth
While all this is happening, Michael has pulled his mom to the gateway to “Heaven.” He says it’s time. Sure enough, when Adriel touches the halo, the doorway to whatever is on the other side opens.
Michael rushes through it.
Kristian, who had found all the drawings, says it is “divine will.” However, the portal closes just before Jillian can get to it. She’s left separated from her son at the end of Warrior Nun season 1.
Duretti wasn’t the enemy
While all this happened, Mother Superion made her way to Duretti, who had now been named the new Pope. This was after she’d killed Sister Crimson and revealed to Ava that she’d once been a Halo Bearer but the halo had rejected her.
One thing Mother Superion could do was get vengeance for Sister Shannon. However, Duretti reveals that he definitely wasn’t the one to kill Sister Shannon. He hadn’t destroyed the Order at all. He just wanted to secure things so he would become the next Pope and could protect the Order.
What was he protecting it from, though? More like who?
Father Vincent, of course. Out of the crypt, Father Vincent calls Adriel “Master” and tells Adriel to leave the fight for now. The sisters realize that Vincent was the one to kill Sister Shannon. There were certainly clues to this throughout, including his tattoos lighting blue because of the divinium.
Adriel is a devil.
Now it’s up to the sisters to fight against him. They subdue Adriel enough but can’t kill him. That’s okay. They didn’t need to kill him.
They just needed seven minutes.
Ava’s halo has now recharged.
In retaliation, Adriel summons the red wraith demons to possess innocent people. We end with the sisters entering a fight with the demons.
That’s it. That’s where we’re left, wondering what’s next for the sisters. What has happened to Lilith, who is immune to Adriel’s powers and can teleport like him? Can Ava save the day and lock Adriel back up? We need Warrior Nun season 2.
Warrior Nun is available to stream on Netflix.
