1. #blackAF

Number of Seasons: 1

What It’s About: #blackAF explores the complicated ideas of a black family trying to adapt to their status as a “new money” family. Kenya Barris produces and stars in the show, which also features Rashida Jones, but the show version of Barris is highly fictionalized.

#blackAF is very different from Barris’ other show Black-ish, though both shows share some of the same characteristics. The writing is sharp, the stories are engaging and thought-provoking and they offer important racial and cultural observations that serve as the perfect jumping-off point for further conversations.

Why It Could Be Cancelled: Barris’ #blackAF debuted on Netflix in April 2020 and it met mixed reviews, receiving a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix hasn’t issued any plans for a second season, but Barris signed an overall production deal with Netflix in 2018 which should guarantee a second season. The decision “should” arrive in June based on previous renewal trends, but with all of the moving pieces happening in the world, it looks like Netflix might be waiting to make the call.

The show’s lackluster reviews could impact whether or not it is renewed, but if anything, it seems like Netflix would order a second season so that Barris can work through some of the material that didn’t seem to work. The show’s concept is a solid one, and its message about family, relationships and race are important.

UPDATE: #BlackAF is coming back for season 2!
