Whether we like it or not, the classics are being remade and rebooted every time look over our shoulder. There’s nothing we can do to stop it, but the reboot revolution might work in our favor with West Side Story. This December, Steve Spielberg’s reimagining of the classic musical, starring Ansel Elgort, hits theaters just in time for the competitive awards season battleground. No doubt, all eyes will be on the success of the remake, but all eyes could arguably be on the original this June on Netflix when it arrives as one of the month’s best new releases.

Based on the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which was also inspired by none other than Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, West Side Story centers on a then-modern day Romeo and Juliet, who find themselves mixed up in the street gangs of New York City. As two Upper West Side gangs battle each other for control their home turf, matters between the gangs grow increasingly complicated when one gang member falls for a rival gang member’s sister.

West Side Story comes from directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, the former of which also directed such movies as The Sound of Music, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won a whopping 10, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Support Actress. West Side Story holds the record for most Oscar wins for a musical, and at the time, it was the highest-grossing musical. Ahead of the upcoming remake, check out the original on Netflix this June.
