Hamilton the musical is coming to Disney Plus in July 2020

Hamilton the musical will be coming to Disney Plus sooner than expected, with the Tony Award-winning musical set to release in July 2020.

From the moment Disney first announced its plans to bring the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton to the big screens, Disney Plus subscribers have been anxiously awaiting to find out when the iconic musical would be available to stream.

Given the musical was set to hit theaters in 2021, the speculation was we’d have to wait until late 2021 at the earliest. However, in a surprise twist, Disney has announced that the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton will now make its way to Disney Plus sooner than anticipated.

As revealed by The Walt Disney Company, Hamilton will be avaiable to watch on Disney Plus across the globe beginning on Friday, July 3. In other words, the Fourth of July holiday weekend just got way more exciting!

"“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda in a press release announcing the news. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”"

The special performance was filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre back in June of 2016 and will feature the original cast including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom, Jr., Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan, and Anthony Ramos.

Hamilton now becomes to the second theatrical release from Disney to make the move from theaters by instead debuting exclusively on Disney Plus, following Artemis Fowl which will arrive on Disney Plus this June. Additional films could follow suit as Disney continues to navigate and adjust its film schedule due to ongoing movie theater closures.
