Disney Plus news: Artemis Fowl release date set for June 2020

Disney Plus has officially set an early summer premiere date for its original film Artemis Fowl, which will not debut exclusively on the streaming platform.

Just weeks after Disney first announced its plans for Artemis Fowl to skip its originally planned theatrical release in heading straight to Disney Plus as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the House of Mouse has confirmed the film will be coming to Disney Plus in early June.

After being pushed from its initial late summer 2019 release, Disney’s live-action adaptation of Eion Colfer’s best-selling Artemis Fowl series was set to finally hit theaters on Friday, May 29 as one of the first big films of the summer movie season.

With movie theaters doors closed and a timeline for their reopening unknown, Disney made the decision to take the film off its theatrical schedule and instead move it over to its streaming service Disney Plus. While initially, it was unknown just how the film’s release date would be affected by the change, the good news is fans won’t have to wait too long for the film to arrive.

As revealed by Disney, Artemis Fowl will be available for streaming on Disney Plus beginning Friday, June 12. That will put the film’s premiere two weeks out from its originally announced theatrical release and is sure to be the most talked-about June release for the service.

Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem,” director Kenneth Branagh teased of the film in the official Disney Plus press release. “His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +.”"

In addition to setting an official premiere date for Artemis Fowl, Disney gifted fans with a new one-minute trailer which offers fans their first look at the fantastical epic adventure.

The trailer does a great job of teasing the film without giving away too much. Given the film was supposed to originally be released in theaters, fans can expect theatrical level effects from the film which we get our first glimpse of via the brief snippets of footage teased by Disney in its newly released trailer.

While it remains uncertain when theaters might be able to reopen or how the summer movie season might be affected, the film’s June release is sure to give families something to look forward to and the film is sure to make for the perfect movie night at home.

The film’s performance on Disney Plus during its debut weekend will also likely help Disney determine the fate of additional films slated to be released in the coming months.
