4. Brave

Pixar has always been great at turning expected storylines on their heads. What did you expect from Brave at first?

I’ll be honest and say that I forgot Merida was a Pixar character. Brave is a Disney movie in my head, which isn’t really a lie. It’s under the Disney Pixar brand. But it’s Pixar at heart and in the graphics, and that’s probably why it breaks down the boundaries set up by old-school Disney princess movies.

Merida isn’t your typical Scottish princess. She wants to be a warrior. This is a woman who loves adventure and life, but her mom expects her to be the princess that she is being raised to be. Naturally, this leads to resentment because teenage girls always have to be resentful of the parents who have certain expectations because of, well, society!

When Merida accidentally turns her mother into a bear, she realizes just how much she wishes she could have her mom back. She heads out on a journey to save her mom, which would then save her entire family.

This isn’t a story of friendship, but one of familial love. It’s one of duty and society, but also one of acceptance and understanding. Most of the movie is just Merida or Merida and her mom as a bear, which means getting creative with conversations. But it all works and comes together for an awesome movie.
