30. Unbelievable

Unbelievable, starring Toni Collette and Merritt Wever, is a harrowing must-see drama that is difficult, and often infuriating to watch, but it is absolutely crucial that we all do. The truth is tough to face, but it’s the only thing that can save us and lead us in the path of changing something that isn’t fair. This is what Unbelievable inspires us all to do.

The drama series follows Marie, an 18-year-old woman who is raped on-and-off for long hours in her apartment in Lynwood, Washington, by an intruder she’s never met. She calls the police, as anyone would do, as soon as the man leaves. Marie gives her statement and recounts the story, trying to remember any details that may help capture this monster. Unfortunately, Marie isn’t treated too kindly and is even accused of making up the story.

Instead of acting kind and understanding towards her, interrogators act indifferent and even press too hard on the young girl who just went through something awful. It’s a traumatizing experience that isn’t made any better by careless detectives.

Not to make you even more upset, but Unbelievable is actually based on a true story. This story stems from a Pulitzer Prize-winning joint investigation in 2015 by two amazing and caring detectives who refused to give up, Stacy Galbraith and Edna Hendershot.

Marie’s journey (and those of other featured victims) to justice won’t be easy to watch, but at its core, Unbelievable is a story on how women aren’t easily believed. And that must change.
