Everyone has their own form of comfort movies, and for many people, Will Ferrell movies always hit the spot. There’s something about his outlandish comedies that have the unmistakeable power of cheering you up and removing you from whatever’s going on in your life. Later this year, Ferrell will return to Netflix in Eurovision, but first, his underrated 2008 basketball comedy Semi-Pro arrives for streaming, and it’s one of the month’s best new releases and pick-me-ups.

Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro as singer Jackie Moon, who finds success as a one-hit wonder in 1976. Jackie uses the profits from his one hit single to fund a lifelong dream of owning his very own basketball team. Suddenly, the Flint Michigan Tropics debut as the worst team in the league, and their future doesn’t look too bright when a merger just might force the team to hang up their jerseys. However, Jackie takes it upon himself to turn the Tropics into a winning team, shoot their shot for survival and avoid becoming a one-hit-wonder again.

Semi-Pro comes from director Kent Alterman, who made his directorial debut with the film. Upon release, the Ferrell flick expectedly grabbed less than stellar reviews from critics, clocking in a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which reflected in its disappointing box office performance. Semi-Pro only made $43.9 million worldwide against a budget of $55 million. Nonetheless, the film remains a favorite among Will Ferrell fans, and 12 years later, moviegoers who missed the basketball spoof have another opportunity to give it a chance when it slam-dunks into Netflix on March 1.
