49. Marianne (TV series)

Premiere date: Sept. 13, 2019

What Marianne is about: The French horror series follows Emma (Victoire Du Bois), a novelist who writes about a witch named Marianne. Emma’s novel series has earned her plenty of fame and money, yet she is a depressed alcoholic haunted by the memories of Marianne, the real witch that tormented Emma and her friends as children. As long as she continues to write about the witch, Marianne will leave them alone, but what will happen when Emma writes reaches the ending of the novels?

Why you need to watch this: American horror can be hit and miss, and we’ve learned to accept that. But why not dip our toes into a foreign land? Marianne is a great place to start! I will be the first to admit that this is a slow burn, but give it time! By the third episode, you’ll be completely captivated by the witch Marianne and want to know all of her secrets and motivations.

Unfortunately, Netflix canceled Marianne after its first season due to not enough people tuning in to watch. I blame poor advertising! Nevertheless, the first season of the series works just fine on its own. While you may still have a few questions after, you’ll enjoy season 1 just fine!

In search of a slow burn movie in the horror genre, but feel like you’ve seen it all? There’s often nothing better than stepping out of your comfort zone to find a hidden gem! With Marianne being a French series, you’ll have to either get used to subtitles or poor dubbed dialogue. In my case, I went with the dialogue.

I’ll admit, it’s not the best. But the fear factor, which is what you are seeking, is definitely there and some of the scenes are very unsettling. Need something that’ll give you an adrenaline rush (and trouble sleeping)? Watch Marianne on Netflix!
