Jamie and Roger

Even though some time has passed between the end of season 4 and the start of season 5, Jamie and Roger are on pretty rocky ground. I have to say, some of my favorite moments from this episode were all the jabs Jamie was making toward Roger. It just cracked me up!

Some were directly to Roger’s face, other times it was between Jamie and Claire and even adorable Germain repeated some of his grand-père’s loving words about Presbyterians having hair ticks, or what he actually meant, they’re heretics.

I especially liked the scene where Jamie helps Roger shave for his wedding. The play on words while basically holding a blade to Roger’s throat was genius. And the fact that Jamie made Brianna’s wedding ring from better material than Roger’s copper and brass, because that one is certainly fit for his daughter. I love the way Sam Heghuan played this scene, and it’s so heartwarming for us to finally see Jamie as the protective and loving father we all knew he would be.

The road to a good relationship between these two will be a long one. What I like is that it’s a different dynamic, between a father-in-law and son-in-law, which we haven’t really seen before on Outlander.

By the end of the episode, we do see a glimpse that just maybe they’ll eventually get along, but it’s probably not going to be easy, especially with poor Roger entirely unequipped for the 18th century.

I know Brianna enjoyed her Da’s antics toward her husband, but if it does take Jamie too long to warm up to Roger I wonder if that will cause some tension between father and daughter. Hopefully, that’s a no because we got enough of that in season 4!
