28. The Pharmacist

Season: 1

Directed By: Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason

Release Date: Wednesday, Feb. 5

Lately, Netflix binge-watchers have been getting into documentary series and talking about them online nonstop. Between the eerie Don’t F— with Cats to the inspiring Cheer, real stories in documentary-style storytelling are what viewers want. Even The Circle has gripped what feels like everyone. If you’re hungry for more real-life stories, Netflix has a documentary series for you to dive headfirst into this February. The Pharmacist tackles a heartbreaking reality, and it’s one of the best new releases heading for your watch list this month.

The Pharmacist centers on a small-town pharmacist named Dan Schneider, who lost his son in 1999 to a drug-related shooting in New Orleans. Schneider didn’t receive very many helpful clues from the police regarding his son’s death, which leads him to take it upon himself to find his son’s killer and get justice. Months after his pursuit of the killer, Schneider found the ripple effects of his son’s death and addiction coming into his pharmacy as young people began bringing him prescriptions for high doses of OxyContin. Before the opioid crisis hit, the pharmacist sensed the issue.

The documentary series, which spans four episodes, traces Schneider’s mission to save young lives from the incoming and prevalent opioid epidemic growing within his community and around the country by taking the fight to Big Pharma. The Pharmacist comes from Julia Willoughby Nason and Jenner Furst, who also worked on Time: The Kalief Browder Story and Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. Jumping off from Netflix’s latest documentaries, The Pharmacist stands to make an equally bold statement and tell an impactful story. Mark your calendar for Feb. 5.
