3. The Keystone Cop

I nearly forgot about this moment from the movie, and I had to be reminded of it to add it to the list.

In A Fall From Grace, Bresha Webb’s character Jasmine is married to a cop. Played by Matthew Law, this cop has a rough time during the movie. He’ll also be involved in our second-favorite bad moment of the movie.

Near the end of the film and after a bad day at court (understatement), Jasmine decides she wants to go to visit a key witness she forced onto the stand. For whatever reason, she asks her husband to drop her off down the street, and then he goes to work. (I just realized that means she wouldn’t have a ride from the place when she was done, but that’s not what’s important right now.)

She goes to the house and finds some things that we know are odd, but she doesn’t really think too much about it immediately. Then, we jump back to the husband, and he is now arresting someone and has them bent over the hood of his car in handcuffs. I don’t know how long this walk was supposed to be, but her husband got a lot done in (maybe) 20 minutes. That’s still not the point I’m trying to get to though.

He gets a call over his radio from another cop who says he’s going to send him something and “you aren’t going to believe this.” Now, why he would stop mid arrest to check a link is one thing but here’s where it gets worse. On his monitor, we see a mugshot of Phylicia Rashad’s (The Cosby Show) character, Sarah, who is from the house Jasmine went to, and he realizes his wife is in danger. He shifts into gear, which makes the man who is on his hood stand up and then speeds off, leaving the man handcuffed and confused.

THEN, when he gets to the house and figures out that Sarah has done something to his wife, he struggles with her before leaning her over the table (the same way the guy was on the hood) and cuffing her. As soon as he has her cuffed, he casually goes off to find his wife. Sarah stands up and simply leaves the house.

I’m glad he was able to help his wife, but he clearly was not good at his job.
