4. The Extra

This was another scene that was pointed out to me before I ever sat down to watch the movie. The scene in question is another one that is meant to be serious. Crystal Fox’s (In the Heat of the Night) character, Grace, is telling her lawyer about how she fell in love with Shannon, and we get to see everything she describes play out.

The scene takes place at a diner, and at the beginning of the scene, you can’t help but notice a certain extra. He looks like either Mike Ditka or the old man from Up, but for some reason, he’s directly in the middle of Tyler Perry’s shot. We’re supposed to be listening to the conversation but this random man is in the middle of our screen. It gets worse.

For some reason, this extra did not have real food, or there was some problem with the food, but he still pretends to eat. First, we see him put an empty glass to his lips and imitate drinking. Moments later, he takes his fork from his plate to his mouth, with nothing on it, and imitates chewing and swallowing.

Throughout the rest of the scene, you get the feeling that this extra would rather be anywhere else. For the majority of the scene, he’s either looking directly into the camera or looking around awkwardly like he wants the scene to be over already. He wasn’t even pretending to engage with the man seated across from him.

Long story short, I had to watch this scene three times before I was able to pay attention to what the pertinent characters were talking about.
