4, Joe’s mother

Another character from Joe’s past, though one we haven’t officially met, is Joe’s neglectful mother, Sandy (Magda Apanowicz). Joe absolutely loved her growing up. Despite putting Joe in harmful situations, leaving him for hours at a time, and making him lie about their whereabouts, Joe was always on his mom’s side. Because of it, he suffered from mental and physical abuse at the hands of his father.

All Joe ever wanted, was for him and his mom to run away together. Instead, she runs off with a boyfriend and drags a reluctant Joe along. It’s unclear through the flashbacks how it all happens, but Sandy is being beaten when Joe shoots the man hurting her. We assume this was his dad.

Even though Sandy hugs and tells Joe that what he did is okay because he was just trying to protect her, you can tell that she is hesitant and sees her son differently. Soon enough a man comes to pick up Joe and takes him to a home. Another assumption we can make is that this home is for troubled youth and a sort of orphanage. Joe never sees his mom again.

However, You season 2 didn’t just take us back through those flashbacks for no reason. There’s a very hot theory going around that the woman Joe has his eyes on in the final moments of the latest season is his mother. You can read more about that here, but it makes a lot of sense.

This wouldn’t be the first time Joe stalks someone without the viewers knowing. He also never leaves cases unresolved. He desperately needs closure, and it surely can’t sit well with him that he never saw his mother again. We also know she’s alive because Joe tells Love that she “is not around,” instead of dead.
