3. Kansas

If you didn’t think of The Wizard of Oz when you saw the Stranger Things 4 renewal announcement, you’re probably not that big of a fan!

“We’re not in Hawkins anymore” is clearly a hat tip to “We’re not in Kansas anymore” from Wizard of Oz when Dorothy says to Toto, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” And, it’s true! They were not in Kansas anymore.

Is Stranger Things, the show that often quotes and references movies, shows, video games, and everything pop culture, just using something that fans will find familiar to promote the new season? Or, is it a clue?

To me, it feels more like a clue. The Byers could definitely be moving to Kansas in the new season. That’s not too far from Indiana, but it’s far enough away to feel like a different place for Joyce.

Kansas also provides a landscape, for the most part, that could be replicated in and around Georgia. Obviously, they aren’t that similar, but if Georgia can pass for Indiana in the series, it can definitely pass for Kansas.
