11. Chewing Gum

Cast: Michaela Coel, Robert Lonsdale, Susan Wokoma, Tanya Franks

Synopsis: Chewing Gum follows Tracey Gordon (portrayed by Michaela Coel), a young woman in her 20s who has been raised by a very religious family. After Tracey and her boyfriend breakup, she decides to also break free from her restricted life and learn more about actually living — specifically, sex.

Why you need to watch: I’ll be the first to admit I have never watched an episode of Chewing Gum. I’m a big fan Michaela Coel and when I watched the first trailer I had every intention on checking it out. Unfortunately, it slipped my mind and other, more popular, shows on Netflix captured my attention.

It wasn’t until recently that I remembered about it and there are already two season out! This means two things. One, it’s a really great series just as I suspected and was hoping. And two, at least now there’s more for me to watch and enjoy over a long weekend. As a bonus, each episode is only approximately 20 minutes long!

Unfortunately, however, the comedy was cancelled after its second season. What did I tell you? Underrated! It’s not too late for its original network (Channel 4) or another streaming service to save it. In the meantime, watch the first two season on Netflix.

Need a bit more about the show before you’re sold on it? If you grew up with strict parents, you will more than relate to Tracey, a young woman who is long overdue for a good time. Still, she faces inner struggles as well as fear of disappointing her parents (and being caught).
