The Ashton Kutcher-led series The Ranch is one of Netflix’s more popular sitcoms. Shot in front of a live audience, it has the classic sitcom styling in its bones and uses that to its advantage.

The Ranch digs into finding your place in the world, and how to enjoy the simpler or more stable pieces of life that you can sometimes take for granted. It manages to balance a juvenile sense of humor with a great sense of character, and on top of that, it has a lot of heart. It shows the kind of life that normally doesn’t get this kind of attention on television, marking it as a unique and interesting look into everyday life.

Ashton Kutcher stars as Colt, a man who never quite hits his dream despite brushing against it several times. Danny Masterson plays his brother Jameson (Rooster). More subdued performances come from their parents, Debra Winger’s Debbie and Sam Elliott’s Beau providing some gravitas to the series and helps show the generational divide in a working-class family.
