Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger: How likely is a season three renewal?

The Season 2 Finale of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger only recently aired but fans are already asking if a third season is in development.

Fans who caught the season two finale of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger know that the episode basically confirmed a third season is in development. The show’s writers have yet to say as much but the finale’s conclusion did that for us.

The reason we know Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger will go on is that the finale ended with Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) setting out on a new adventure together. They managed to put an end to D’Spayre (Brooklyn McLinn) with a climactic showdown then left the city on a bus headed somewhere. While their destination is unknown, the mention of a beach gives us the impression they’re headed west to Los Angeles — possibly to meet up with the Runaways.

In any case, a junior season seems inevitable. Since the C&D writers chose to end Season Two on such a tantalizing cliffhanger, it probably means they’re building towards a new storyline. Of course, fans need to consider how well the show did in ratings before jumping to conclusions.

If we’re looking at the numbers, Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger actually didn’t do that well. There was a big dropoff on the same night that CBS aired its’ series finale of Big Bang Theory and the rest of Season 2 has seen an equal decrease in same-day viewings. We still need to account for delayed viewings but that doesn’t change the fact that Cloak And Dagger saw a gradual decrease in viewer numbers throughout the season.

Because of those variables, fans should be prepared for a possible cancellation. We’ve already seen how easily Marvel series can be discarded and ratings usually determine if that’s going to happen or not. The good news is that Marvel/Disney is in the position to keep Cloak And Dagger alive regardless of ratings.

With Disney now in the process of acquiring all shares of Hulu, the media giant could send Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger over to the streaming service in the scenario of Freeform canceling it. Disney could also send C&D’s heroes over to the Disney Plus streaming service but considering the mature themes present in the Freeform show, odds are that Cloak and Dagger will wind up on Hulu instead.
