Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger Season 2 finale sets stage for crossover with Runaways
By Paul Zuniga
Even though Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger closed out on a rather vague note, the concluding moments of Season 2 hinted at the duo reappearing in another corner of the universe — one awfully close to Marvel’s Runaways.
In the Season 2 Finale of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger, Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) face their greatest challenge yet: themselves. The underground heroes are forced to combat their deepest, darkest fears while inside of the Loa dimension, except it’s these fears manifesting into physical representations that have them shook. Tandy and Tyrone struggle with the demonic force controlling them but the duo find faith and courage in each other, enough so that they manage to subdue Andre (Brooklyn McLinn).

At the end of the episode, Tandy and Tyrone set out on a new adventure. Now that they’ve put a stop to the human-trafficking ring in New Orleans, it’s time for them to continue their crusade elsewhere. Neither Tandy or Tyrone say exactly where they’re headed but Miss Bowen mentions that Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) uncovered a string of murders located on a beach — and this will presumably be their next destination. There are only a few coasts they could be headed to on a bus, though it seems like Tandy and Ty are going west to Los Angeles.
The reason they’re likely headed to the West Coast rather than East is that Cloak and Dagger have a rather interesting comic arc that intersects with the Runaways. The duo was originally based in New York but considering how much they’ve developed so far on the Freeform show, it seems more appropriate for them to journey to Los Angeles where they’ll clash with the Runaways.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, we’ll note that no crossover has been confirmed yet by either show’s producers. Marvel’s Runaways is in the middle of production on Season 3 but that doesn’t mean Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph are slated to appear in the upcoming season. Of course, the conveniently open ending to Season 2 of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger does give us the impression their characters are headed to Los Angeles.
Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that Marvel’s Runaways and Cloak And Dagger could exist in entirely different universes. ABC’s Agents of SHIELD at one time intersected with the MCU storyline but has since diverged into to its own universe. Proof can be found in how none of the show’s characters seem to know anything about New York’s superhero showdowns.

The Defenders and their various archnemeses caused quite a bit of noise which should’ve been brought to SHIELD’s attention, but since they’re absent in the Agents’ sector of the Marvel Universe, that confirms the two groups exist in separate universes. Cloak And Dagger, however, is the exception since it possesses a very distinct quality that could allow for a crossover regardless of established parameters: Tyrone’s dimension-hopping cloak.
On the show, he’s only scratched the surface of his using his cloak to access other dimensions but it could potentially be used to jump into other universes as well. We saw in the finale that Evita (Noëlle Renée Bercy) was able to transport Tandy and Tyrone to the Loa Dimension using his cloak, so there’s nothing preventing the show’s writers from using Tyrone’s cloak as a means of transportation into different dimensions — places where the Runaways exist.
Theories aside, the writers of Marvel’s Runaways and Cloak And Dagger should take advantage of this opportunity to work in a potentially epic crossover between two current series. Marvel has been very coy about their crossovers but it’s about time two of their live-action series collide in a momentous meeting. Lucky for Marvel and its’ affiliate companies, they have two different shows that can crossover without creating a slew of continuity errors in the process.
