4. Marco’s secret

Audiences learn early on in the series that Lisa’s parents died in a fire when she was a little girl. When they passed, having no other known relatives, Lisa’s nanny adopted her to keep her from going into the broken foster care system.

Lisa grew up in a loving and happy household, but her adoptive brother, Marcos (Juan Castano) has always kept a secret from her and everyone else in his life — Marcos was the one who started the fire.

Unable to push the guilt from his conscience any longer, Marcos breaks down one day and tells Lisa the truth. The day of the tragedy, Marcos was playing with a magnifying class in the room. It was an innocent game and not at all intentional.

Viewers have mixed feelings here. For starters, poor Marcos. To be such a young boy dealing with so many feelings of guilt must not have been easy. Also, Lisa realizing her brother is the reason her parents are dead is challenging, Lisa and her brother are incredibly close. Lisa immediately forgives him, but she does have a question.

Lisa asks Marcos if their parents know and wonders if the only reason they adopted her was that they felt guilty. Their mom enters the room, in shock by all she has overheard. Marcos never told anybody, their mother did the adoption out of love.
