10. The bugs

Initially, The Perfection appears to be a revenge-drama. Audiences believe Charlotte is out to eliminate Lizzie, perhaps to take her spot at the institution. It doesn’t help that when Charlotte reaches out to Anton and his wife Paloma to ask if she can join them, she tells them that her mom “finally died.”

“Finally”? That’s harsh. I get taking care of your mother for so long, all while putting your entire life and dreams on hold, isn’t easy. But it’s that particular choice of words that makes viewers immediately suspect Charlotte’s up to no good.

Sure enough, Charlotte catches up to Anton and Paloma, and meets Lizzie. This all happens within the first 20 minutes of the film, so The Perfection truly wastes no time in spiraling down and making us all want to puke.

Charlotte and Lizzie get on a bus despite Lizzie claiming to feel sick. In no time, Lizzie is puking and — wait, what is that? Maggots! Literal maggots are in Lizzie’s vomit and in the dozens! And yes, they’re all alive and squirming everywhere.

Disgusted and afraid for his own health, the driver kicks them out of the bus. Lizzie continues to puke, but this time it’s beetles she releases. Did I hit pause on my screen? You bet! And once more when Lizzie points out there are bugs crawling inside of her arm. I’m not sure what this set of bugs are, but they force their way out of Lizzie’s hand, leaving bloody holes behind, and they’re not stopping. Barf.
