Unlike prior seasons of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, the season six premiere kicked off with a new member of the covert organization leading the charge. Though, Agent Coulson’s absence is noticeable throughout the episode.

When the season six premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD kicks off, Daisy is in outer space on a mission to recover the frozen Fitz from the recesses of space. Enoc’s spaceship, however, is attacked by an unknown vessel and Fitz is taken from the wreckage before the Shield team can reach him. Daisy and Gemma wind up finding the cryo-chamber he was housed in but with their friend is nowhere to be found. Everything on the pod is still intact so Fitz is alive somewhere, we just don’t know where he was taken.

Back on Earth, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Alfonso Mackenzie is taking the role of leader the hardest. The job has become so tough that he’s apparently had a falling out with Yo-Yo, and she’s even begun dating a fellow Agent. They live and work in tight quarters so it’s not surprising that Yo-Yo is romantically involved with someone but Agent Keller could be in for some hell.

The shocking aspect of this development is that Yo-Yo and Mack have split for good. Even though they had a rough patch in season five, the two Agents seem destined to be together. Of course, Mack’s explanation to Agent May in the bar makes it clear that he chose the job over his relationship so Yo-Yo has a good reason for moving on.

So far, there haven’t been any major repercussions of Yo-Yo fraternizing with a fellow Agent but when we consider that Mack is the new Director, he might not be too kind to Yo-Yo’s new boyfriend if their relationship becomes public knowledge—May already knows about it.

Apart from the in-house battles, S.H.I.E.L.D. just can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to planetary threats. The newest of these dangers is a dimension-hopping pirate: Juco. He and his band of merry friends work for a man that looks identical to Agent Phil Coulson. The mystery man appears after a huge dimensional portal opens up for him and his massive armored truck.

Meanwhile, the newly-formed S.H.I.E.L.D. squad is lying in complete defeat. Several agents are down and Agent May is barely clinging on to consciousness. She manages enough strength to stand when Sarge appears in front of her. She calls him “Coulson” but Sarge rebuffs her advances by clarifying that he’s a different person. He, Juco, and the rest of their crew then disappear into a similar rift.

The episode “Missing Pieces” ends with Sarge’s renegades on the lamb but this group appears to have a more devious scheme planned. Sarge was clearly serious about killing every one of May’s squad and Juco also had no problem shooting a plane out of the sky. Considering their willingness to take such a violent approach to an entirely different universe, Sarge must have some grand reason for being there. The question is: what does Sarge have planned? And could he be working for someone else?
