The Enemy Within recap: “Havana” gets the team one step closer, but two steps back
By Paul Zuniga
The latest episode of NBC’s The Enemy Within dug deeper into the covert network built by Mikael Tal but Agent Keaton’s team is still no closer to finding him. Are their efforts for naught?
In episode five of NBC’s The Enemy Within, Agent Keaton (Morris Chestnut) finally learns the identity of his mole. It’s not someone he expects of working with Tal but she’s clearly a devout follower to his cause.
Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of The Enemy Within follow. You’ve been warned.
Surprisingly, Anna Cruz (Coral Peña) is the traitor. She became a member of Tal’s network of terrorists from a very early age, devoting her life to the cause. No one suspected Anna of being a traitor until Erika Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) baited her with intel, especially not Keaton.
When Agent Keaton learns that Anna is the one who accessed their file system, he assumes Shepherd tricked her or someone else into using the terminal. The trap almost backfires on Shepherd but she explains all the connections between Anna and Tal. Keaton begins seeing the clues for what they are and comes around to the same conclusion. The bad news is that he has to figure out how to flip a potentially dangerous informant after.

To do so, Keaton agrees to take a road trip with the spy. Their mission is to a secluded cabin that supposedly belonged to Nemec, of course, everyone knows it’s Anna’s old hideout.
A flashback from earlier in “Havana” revealed that Anna took possession of the cabin in secret—killing the only neighbor nearby.
While on their car ride, the mood is very tense between Keaton and Anna. They’re secret agents with causes to fight for—causes that they’d also be willing to die for. At the same time, both Anna and Keaton have to retain the facade, otherwise, one of them will get the drop on the other.
When they finally arrive at their destination, Keaton makes a final attempt to reach Anna. She doesn’t immediately respond to his advances but Anna eventually agrees to help. Sadly, she takes too long to make her decision.
Seconds after agreeing to flip on Tal, a high-caliber bullet comes flying through the window and Anna is hit in the chest. Keaton is right by her side to provide medical attention but the wound is a fatal one. Anna dies shortly after.
In the wake of all this calamity, Keaton prepares to confront the sniper who assassinated Anna. The intruder walks into the cabin with his gun drawn, leaving Keaton with no choice but to shoot him. The trail goes cold once again.
Back at the FBI headquarters, the team attempts to console Keaton over the loss. They speak of all the good their investigation did but Keaton is still reeling from Anna’s death. She was moments away from brokering a deal for a second chance at life when it sadly got cut short—and Keaton had to witness all of that disappear in front of his very eyes.
To make matters worse, Keaton receives a call from Tal on Anna’s old phone. He congratulates Agent Keaton on weeding out his mole then drops a bigger bombshell on him, figuratively speaking.
Tal informs Keaton that Anna was just one of many secret agents working within the FBI. He could be lying but the camera flashing back to Shepherd in her cell gives us the impression that she may actually be a traitor. Then again, another member of Keaton’s team could just as easily be a Tal operative.
