In danger: Altered Carbon

Number of seasons: 2

Network it airs on: Netflix

What it’s about: Set in a dystopian future, people no longer have to die. They can be put into “skins,” as their mental elements have been downloaded into what are called stacks. Takeshi Kovacs has been placed into a new body, despite him being a criminal — the only survivor from an elite team of rebels who were taken down following an uprising.

Kovacs finds himself on a mission to figure out who killed his client. Would it be his wife? An enemy? Or maybe it was the guy himself.

However, it’s not all that simple. Kovacs finds himself in the middle of a growing conspiracy and his life and freedom are both at risk. Oh, and it doesn’t help that his skin is the body of a cop’s deceased lover.

Why it’s in danger of being canceled in 2019: I’ll admit that it’s unfair to put Altered Carbon on this list considering the second season hasn’t even aired yet, but I’m throwing it out there. To be honest, recent reports about why Netflix cancels shows after a couple of seasons despite good viewership and a social media following has me worried about it.

Let’s be honest here. Altered Carbon‘s renewal was a shock for some. While it was a good show, it didn’t have the following that some other shows out there have. Obviously, not everyone is going to be on social media and that following doesn’t necessarily translate to views, but it is a good indication.

With the way Netflix Originals’ budgets increase, the idea of the show being renewed for a third season is possibly a pipe dream. It will depend on whether it will be another set of actors, so Netflix can pay less, and whether the following definitely is there. We’ll have to wait and see.
