Fans are understandably outraged at Netflix UK changing the ending to The Notebook. What about the movie in other locations and what does it mean for Netflix U.S. when it’s added?

The Notebook isn’t on Netflix U.S. yet, but it is coming. However, fans of the emotional romantic comedy won’t like it if the streaming service does the same as Netflix UK. The ending has been changed slightly for the Brits, cutting out the last 30 seconds or so of the movie, according to Digital Spy.

Fans of the book adaptation will remember Noah and Allie going to sleep while holding hands. The next morning, a nurse comes in to check on them and finds that they’ve both died in their sleep, still holding hands. Then it cuts to a flock of birds over the lake for the credits.

Sweet, emotional, and everything we needed to end this love story. Of course, it was different from the novel, but fans didn’t care, right?

Well, now fans do. In Netflix UK, the scene between going to sleep and the birds has completely been removed. There’s no nurse. She doesn’t find them in peaceful death together. It cuts from going to sleep straight to the birds. But why?

In Netflix Canada, the full movie is available. It makes no sense to remove a small scene unless there was some sort of licensing issue. But there’s no reason that one scene would cause a licensing problem. It suggests that UK audiences wouldn’t like the final, tear-jerking scene.

What does this mean for U.S. subscribers? The Notebook isn’t on Netflix U.S. yet, but it is coming. Netflix announced that the movie would drop on Mar. 15 for the first time (although the list of everything coming to Netflix in March puts it on the Mar. 1 drop, so it could come early). It’s not clear whether fans will get the full version (like Canada) or the unusually cut version (like the UK). I hope it’s the full version!
