Based on the Dark Horse comic book series by the same name, The Umbrella Academy follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes. The group of seven adopted siblings reunites after the mysterious death of their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Their billionaire father intentionally adopted children with special powers to form a team of superheroes that he named “The Umbrella Academy.”

Hargreeves uses numbers rather than names to identify each of his adoptive children. Here is a breakdown of their superhero names and abilities:

  • Number One (Spaceboy): super strength
  • Number Two (The Kraken): extensive breath-holding and knife-throwing skills
  • Number Three (The Rumor): manipulates reality
  • Number Four (The Séance): communicates with the dead
  • Number Five (The Boy):  jumps through time and space
  • Number Six (The Horror): possesses monsters within other dimensions
  • Number Seven (The White Violin): led to believe she has no special abilities

As children, the group was forced to fight crime but they went on to pursue different lives. The estranged siblings come together just as a threat of an apocalyptic event on the horizon. The ragtag group will have to come together and use their powers to stop the inevitable.

The Umbrella Academy dabbles in numerous genres including action, fantasy, sci-fi, and comedy. Also important to note is the fact that Mary J. Blige stars as an assassin named Cha-Cha. If that doesn’t sell you on the series, we don’t know what will.
