24. The Shannara Chronicles

The Shannara Chronicles is based on The Sword of Shannara books by Terry Brooks. The series begins with demons returning to the Four Lands after being banished to the Forbidding years ago. While the books follow Shea Ohmsford, the series changed that to follow his son, Wil who is a half human/half-elf and who also just so happens to be the last in the Shannara bloodline.

Along with Wil, the series follows Amberle, an elven princess, and Eretria, a human who was raised by a group of thieves. Together, they must go on a quest in order to protect the Ellcry trees from dying and releasing all the demons who haven’t already been set loose on the Four Lands.

The Shannara Chronicles stars Austin Butler, Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Aaron Jakubenko, Marcus Vanco, Poppy Drayton, Brooke Williams, Melise, Vanessa Morgan, Gentry White, and Emilia Burns.

The series also shows Wil receiving the elfstones from his dying mother and him deciding to travel to Storlock to learn the art of healing. Unfortunately, on his way, he is attacked by a troll but is ultimately saved by Eretria who steals his stones and drugs Wil. She is a thief after all. What was she supposed to do?

Amberle eventually comes across Eretria and steals her food and her horse, heading to find her aunt. Amberle is haunted by what she saw when she touched the Ellcrys trees and fled Arborlon. The show goes on to show the journey Wil, Eretria, and Amberle take as they try to solve their own personal issues and save the Four Lands from the demons that are being released on the land.

The Shannara Chronicles and Game of Thrones have a lot of fantasy elements in common. There are rulers, grabs for power, violence, a group of villains coming for everyone in the land, and even a character with visions.

While the demons and the White Walkers might not look too similar, they have the same effect on the people they’re attacking. They must be stopped before they take over and kill everything. This show is definitely worth checking out.
