There are only days left until its return, and it looks like Freeform’s Shadowhunters is coming back with a bang. With some help from the official sneak peeks and the book series, we break down what we know about Season 3 Episode 11 “Lost Souls.”

Warning! Possible spoilers for Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt follow. You’ve been warned.

It’s been quite a hiatus for Shadowhunters fans, with the show being canceled shortly after the midseason finale. And while it’s certainly a bittersweet time, there has definitely been a lift in the fandom’s mood with the release of new content.

Freeform dropped an official synopsis for the episode, titled “Lost Souls,” on January 24—one that gives us a bit of insight into what the characters are feeling at the start of the midseason.

Take a look at the official synopsis for “Lost Souls” below. It reiterates a fact we all knew but there’s something left out about Clary. Those of us keeping up with the Shadowhunters’ Twitter posts know what lies ahead.

"In the emotional midseason premiere, everyone is dealing with the loss of Clary and are trying to move on best they can. Unbeknownst to them, the Shadowhunters face a new level of evil that they can’t even imagine with the arrival of Jonathan Morgenstern."

While the characters assume Clary (Katherine McNamara) is dead, it’s pretty clear from the show’s social media and promotion that we’ll definitely be seeing her again. What form she’s in, however, is up in the air, since there have been plenty of pictures of McNamara sporting a black wig on Twitter. Despite the massive cliff hanger, there’s a good change Clary is going to show up in the mid-season premiere, along with her newly resurrected brother, Jonathan (Luke Baines).

City of Lost Souls (the origin for the episode title) is the second to last installment in Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series and gives us some clues as to where Clary’s story might go. In the book, Jace is the one who ends up missing after Jonathan is resurrected at the end of City of Fallen Angels. After Clary tries to find him, Jace eventually goes to her and manages to draw her into the fold with Jonathan.

Where the show is concerned, it’s pretty clear this will be flipped. In one of the official clips, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) meets with Luke (Isaiah Mustafa), who is still trying to find Clary. While Luke seems determined to believe Clary is alive, Jace isn’t so sure. In fact, a separate sneak peek shows that he still blames himself for Clary’s death.

Jace isn’t the only one with a guilty conscience, though. It seems as though Simon (Alberto Rosende), is also in despair over his part in Clary’s “death.” As many book fans know, the Mark of Cain plays a huge role in the final two books. So while it’s clearly a burden to Simon (as it was always meant to be) it’s unlikely that he’ll be rid of it as soon —and as easily—as he hopes.

Of course, the episode wouldn’t be complete without a resolution to the fan favorite Malec storyline. When they were last seen, Magnus (Harry Shum Jr. ) had just given up his magic in escaping from Edom and defeating the Owl. Alec (Matthew Daddario) was almost fatally wounded without magic to save him. The couple seemed to be thriving in the season trailer, however. And it seems like they’ll be on babysitting duty in the episode, thanks to the clip released by GLAAD. No doubt the episode will also be dealing with the fallout of Alec’s near-death experience and a mortal Magnus, but the domesticity is certainly a good way to soften any angst.

So what do you think will happen in the latest episode? Will Luke’s theory about Lilith play out or is Jace right to be wary? Will Simon’s struggle with the Mark be the end of his relationship with Maia? And will Magnus’ brave face about his newfound mortality breakdown by the end of the episode? Most importantly, however, will Clary be found before it’s too late and Jonathan corrupts her forever? Let us know your thoughts down below!
