Netflix just won its first Oscar ever thanks to Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma.

Roma just snagged Netflix its first Oscar ever–can you believe it?! Director Alfonso Cuaron accepted the award for Best Cinematography with as much pride and joy that all of us fans are feeling right now. Cuaron wrote and directed the film which is based on memories of his childhood growing up in Mexico in the 1970s.

This is a huge accomplishment for Netflix considering its the first time it has ever won such a prestigious award. This is Cuaron’s third Oscar win who won previously for 2013’s Gravity. However, his Oscar win for Best Cinematography on Roma makes it the very first time a director has won in this category.

Cuaron came into this year’s Oscars with four nominations–Cinematography, Director, Foreign Film, and Best Picture. Based on the one win he has already garnered along with all the critical acclaim Roma has received, it will not be surprising to see him and the movie walk away with more. Goodness knows he deserves it with the mindblowing movie he treated us all with.

As the Academy Awards keep progressing towards the category we are all waiting for, it should be noted that if Roma wins for Best Picture tonight, it would be historical. Never before has a foreign film won an Oscar in this category, but given how the night and this awards season has gone, it’s not an impossible feat. Plus, if you’ve seen Roma you know that the film deserves it more than anything.

Originally, any “behind-the-scenes” awards were to be announced during commercials but with a public outcry from the industry, the Academy reversed their decision. And we’re glad they did because we got to see Netflix win their very first Oscar on live television, and it was every bit exciting and inspiring then we could have ever imagined.

Congratulations to Alfonso Cuaron, Netflix, and the cast and crew of Roma for their first win!
