On the latest episode of The Simpsons, Krusty the Clown gets another feature episode of his own. In “The Clown Stays In The Picture”, Springfield’s favorite clown explains the history of his long lost film, The Sands Of Space.

The long mythology crafted around The Simpsons’ Krusty The Clown has never surprised us when it comes to business ventures he participated in. He’s done practically everything to make it big but always manages to succumb to his own hubris.

A recently unexplored chapter of Krusty’s was revealed in Season 30, Episode 14. In this particular episode, Krusty tells the tale of his failed movie entitled The Sands Of Space. He gives a detailed testimonial of the adventure to Marc Maron on his podcast.

Maron, who actually has a podcast and made a documentary-style comedy show partially based on his own life, guest-starred as himself in “The Clown Stays In The Picture”.

When Maron and Krusty get into their discussion, Springfield’s favorite clown isn’t too receptive of the interviewer’s questioning. Krusty doesn’t want to talk about The Sands Of Space but quickly changes his mind when Maron brings up the exploding milkshakes in Krusty Burger’s kids’ meals.

According to Krusty, the early years of his acting career included a hell-bent mission on getting a science fiction movie made. The Sands Of Space was deemed a failure by Hollywood executives but Krusty didn’t care so he ventured off.

In his quest to create the inevitably doomed film, Krusty recruited a crew of production staff from Springfield’s own residents. Among them were Homer and Marge Simpsons. The newly established couple saw the job posting as an opportunity to work together and grow closer to one another. Unfortunately, they weren’t counting on Krusty getting in the middle.

Now, Krusty didn’t try to break Marge and Homer up but he decided that his need for Marge’s guidance outweighed her love for Homer. Krusty then plotted to have Homer accidentally killed on set. Homer avoided all the pitfalls waiting for him but a mission into the desert led Homer to a drug dealer’s den.

After getting captured, the drug dealers send a ransom letter to Krusty for Homer’s release. Krusty doesn’t want to pay but the crew won’t leave their colleague behind. Carl, Lenny, and Marge then lead a charge to invade the drug dealers’ cottage.

At the drug den, a shootout ensues. The Sands Of Space production crew aren’t packing any real guns themselves so the dealers lay waste to them. No one important dies but we learn how Captain McAllister loses his leg.

There’d never been an explanation as to how he got a peg leg but now we know that McAllister sustained the injury during The Sands Of Space production run.

In the end, Marge intervenes in the shootout and exchanges Krusty’s finished film for Homer’s release. The drug dealers agree and everyone returns to Springfield with their lives.

As for Krusty, the ending to his interview with Marc Maron leaves us with a glimpse at the final cut of Krusty’s long lost film. The problem is that Krusty’s movie is viewed as a comedy rather than a sci-fi epic like he intended. Krusty isn’t upset but his embarrassment prevents him from taking any credit for The Sands Of Space.
