Jane the Virgin will sign off with its fifth and final season this spring, but fans can get excited about The CW’s potential anthology spin-off.

Good news from the Marbella hotel! If you’re a fan of Jane the Virgin, then you know how rare of an occurrence that can be. Although the Golden Globe-winning telenovela satire will bid farewell with its upcoming fifth and final season this March on The CW, that might not be the last we hear from Jane Villanueva. Well, at least the works of Jane Villanueva.

The CW recently announced its slate of pilot orders for the 2019-2020 television season, which includes reboots of The Lost Boys and Nancy Drew as well as spin-offs of Riverdale and Jane the Virgin. As thrilling as it could be to catch up with those lost boys, Nancy Drew, and Archie Comics’ Katy Keene, the Jane offshoot might leave fans scratching their heads. How will this work?

Variety reports that the possible spin-off will be an anthology series titled Jane the Novelas. Rather than centering on Jane or any of the various characters we know and love, each season of the spin-off will adapt one of Jane’s novels and embrace the full novela effect. But don’t think Jane won’t be involved. Gina Rodriguez will serve as the narrator, punctuating the drama with Jane’s voice.

The first season of Jane the Novelas would be centered at a Napa Valley vineyard and follow a family whose secrets and members “don’t stay buried for long.” Just like Jane the Virgin, the deadly twists and turns will keep viewers on their toes. That’s no surprise since the spin-off comes from Jane writer and co-executive producer Valentina Garza and counts series creator Jennie Snyder Urman, titular star Gina Rodriguez, and executive producers Ben Silverman and Brad Silberling as executive producers.

Rodriguez shared the news of Jane the Novelas on Instagram, posing from the set of the final season of Jane the Virgin with on-screen son Mateo and… a baby bump?! “Jane will be birthing a SPIN OFF!!!!!” she said in the caption, a clever nod to the spoiler in the photo. The fifth season kicks off in the aftermath of Season 4’s shocking cliffhanger, but we’re clearly in for many more surprises as Jane writes the final chapter and closes the book.

Perhaps if Jane the Novelas receives a series order and becomes as successful as its parent series, one of the seasons will center on one of Jane’s future semi-autobiographical novels and we’ll meet back up with the author herself in the form of an even more over-the-top telenovela. With a spin-off this unique, the possibilities are endless. One thing’s for sure, though. A spin-off would ease the pain of saying goodbye to one of television’s most consistently great dramedies.

What do you think of the potential spin-off? Do you hope to watch it in place of the original series next season? What do you hope to see from Jane the Novelas, and which of Jane’s stories do you want to see adapted? Share your thoughts and predictions in the comments!

The fifth and final season of Jane the Virgin premieres on Wednesday, March 27 at 9/8c on The CW.
