ABC recently aired the season finale of The Conners and it left audiences with a number of cliffhangers. The question is: what will happen next?

Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of The Conners follow. You’ve been warned.

In the season one finale of The Conners, each member of the family deals with major changes in their lives. Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) comes to terms with the reality of Peter (Matthew Broderick) being a poor excuse for a boyfriend. Darlene (Sara Gilbert) grapples with leaving one family behind to start anew somewhere else. And Becky (Lecy Goranson), she finally gives Emilio (Rene Rosado) a chance to be a loving father.

The bad news is that all these particular developments end poorly for most of the Conner family. Jackie, for instance, didn’t take to her revelation about Peter too well. In fact, the only reason she decided to break up with Peter is because she caught him cheating. She put up with everything else, but cheating was the final straw.

In response to this deep emotional blow, Jackie goes on a bender. She drinks so much that she winds up back at her old restaurant, the Lunchbox. It’s become a Chinese food restaurant since then but that doesn’t prevent Jackie from reminiscing about better times in her drunken stupor.

Dan (John Goodman) and Darlene only learn of Jackie’s belligerent antics when a friend calls, telling them that Jackie is going to be arrested. They arrive to find Jackie clinging to a bottle while yelling at the customers in the restaurant. She’s extremely distraught over the Peter situation and doesn’t know what to do next. Jackie also reveals that she’s still grieving over her sister.

While fans haven’t been too broken up over Roseanne Barr leaving the show, the surviving characters don’t feel the same way. They still hold a great deal of love for Roseanne, evidenced by Dan’s rebuffing of Louise’s advances.

Our biggest concern for Jackie is that she may need to seek professional help. She’s had a difficult time forming relationships in the past and clearly hasn’t accepted the loss of her sister yet either. This issue and many more seem to be bubbling under the surface—all of which need to be addressed before they become any worse.

As for Darlene, her future is a bit more optimistic. She has two proposals on the table—and one of them is from David (Johnny Galecki). He returned at the worst possible time, asking Darlene to get back together with him.

Shocked by David’s sudden resurgence, she doesn’t know how to respond. Darlene was prepared to move in with Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) seconds before David arrived, but now her first love has come knocking on her door. She’s touched by David’s spontaneous move but Darlene chooses Ben over him.

In the end, Darlene doesn’t wind up moving to Chicago but she decides to remain with Ben in a long-distance relationship. This arrangement may work for them but that’s still up for debate. Hopefully, they figure it out because David doesn’t seem like the right person for Darlene.

Last but certainly not least, Becky. Everything was going great for her at the beginning of the episode. Emilio and Dan went out shopping for the baby, bringing Becky back all kinds of things she can use.

Becky even comes around to the idea of having a relationship with Emilio. She explores the potential in a romantic meet with Emilio at the park where she admits to falling for Emilio’s charms. He’s just as excited to be there, emphasizing how much he’s looking forward to having a baby with Becky.

At this point in the season finale, Becky’s life is looking quite good—that is until a tragic turn of events flips their lives upside down.

In the episode’s concluding moments, Dan overhears from a friend that an ICE raid downtown landed several illegal immigrants in detention—Emilio being one of them. Dan can’t confirm what’s happened but one final call from Emilio confirms his suspicions.

Emilio calls Becky to inform her that he’s being deported. He tells her that after a few months, he’ll make the journey back to them, but until then, Emilio has to remain in Mexico. Becky is devastated by the news.

It’s worth mentioning that Dan has grown quite fond of Emilio so he may petition to have Emilio brought back. Dan has made his stance on illegal immigration very clear in the past but he’s willing to make exceptions for worthwhile individuals, like Emilio. Perhaps Dan and Becky will find a way to appeal Emilio’s deportation even though the United States’ current laws make accomplishing that task quite difficult.

In any case, the Conners have a tough time ahead of them. We still don’t know whether or not a second season will happen but with the amazing success of season one—and those insane cliffhangers—it’s safe to say that season two is a go.
