Grey’s Anatomy season 15, episode 9 recap: Shelter from the Storm
By Ariba Bhuvad
Grey’s Anatomy may be back from its winter hiatus but the storm is still brewing in Grey Sloan Memorial.
Grey’s Anatomy hit us hard with its winter premiere and did not waste any time getting back into the drama of things. If you recall, the winter finale left off with the storm knocking out the hospital’s power. This left some of our favorites stuck in an elevator while others were scattered around Grey Sloan.
We also left Nico and Levi getting busy in the ambulance, barely coming up for air. Inside the hospital, the generators turned the power back on but the elevators were still out of service. And then we have Owen, Amelia, and Teddy and the big pregnancy reveal. It was likely not they would have wished to break the news to Amelia, but she finds out when Owen starts talking to Teddy about it. Now, the old Amelia would have blown a fuse, and while this one is still losing it, she’s also fairly calm.
While love stories are falling apart in the Owen elevator, one is brewing in DeLuca and Meredith’s. It has been clear that DeLuca is very attracted to Meredith, but it would appear the feeling is mutual. And how can it not be? Have you seen DeLuca?! Let’s just say things were starting to get pretty heated until the elevators opened up.

Bailey and Taryn were busy trying to keep the organs harvested that were meant for Pierce and Meredith’s patient, Cece. With nowhere to go, the both of them started having panic attacks and had to find a way to calm down. Honestly, if that was me, I’d have lost it from the get-go.
All of this stress started to get to Bailey who is still dealing with the fear she carries with her about Ben dying. And while Taryn was trying to keep herself and Bailey calm, Jackson was trying to get the elevators open to get the organs for Cece. Mind you, he’s just learned about his mother’s cancer and is feeling completely destroyed.
Eventually, Jackson, Link, and the building manager were able to open the elevator door and get the organs. However, it came at the expense of crush the building manager’s legs. Ouch! Poor guy, he was a huge fan of Cece’s who set him up with a nurse in Grey Sloan and she was the only reason he broke protocol to open the doors.
The drama continues in Grey’s Anatomy as Amelia, Owen, and Teddy have to set aside their mama drama to take care of the patient with them in the elevator. Because the patient began crashing, they were forced to operate right there. A sternum was cracked, the patient was cut open, and emotions were flying as they worked together to help save the patient.
Naturally, the conversation led back to the problem at hand. Teddy said she was going to live in Seattle but doesn’t need Owen to be with her. She just wants the baby to have both of its parents but it doesn’t mean Owen has to leave Amelia. :: Cue Amelia rolling her eyes :: Later, Owen expresses his excitement about being a dad and said they will figure it out. But, it’s a bit shady because Owen and Teddy almost kissed. Come on, guys!
In elevator de romance, DeLuca was appealing to Meredith by speaking in Italian and talking about his father and who he was. It turns out Meredith knew how to speak Italian which drove DeLuca just a little bit crazy. It’s a shame that the elevator doors opened, though.
Meanwhile, Alex had to cut his and Jo’s second honeymoon short and headed to the hospital. Before he went in, he caught Nico and Levi in the ambulance, leaving the two of them to worry about the future of their jobs. Webber had to deal with a lot in this episode, and he didn’t even find out about Catherine until the end.
With the hospital in disarray and Owen and Amelia stuck, Betty was left to roam the hospital halls. Webber happens to stop her from finding the drugs she was frantically looking for. Phew. And even though she asks him not to tell Amelia, he says he absolutely will.
Cece’s organs were being delivered to her but in the meantime, she began coding while she was talking to Pierce about being with Jackson. The heart transplant is successful, but before they can finish up the kidney transplant, Cece crashes and passes away. What a heartbreaking Grey’s Anatomy moment.
Bailey’s anxiety gets the best of her in the winter premiere, and boy, does she break down. Alex finds his way to the office angry and flustered with her behavior. Luckily, he sees that she is in distress and as she breaks down in front of him, it becomes clear that she needs to take a long, long break.
Can we please talk about how sweet Amelia has become? Although it is breaking her heart to let Owen go, she is willing to do so. She tells him she wants him to be happy, and he needs to put his child first–even if it means being with Teddy. Ugh, this episode was all the feels. Besides, Amelia had Betty to deal with who she is sending off to rehab with her permission.
This riveting episode of Grey’s Anatomy ends on another heart-crushing moment as Pierce and Jackson decide to tell Webber about Catherine. This isn’t going to end well, and we’re not ready for his reaction. But hey, at least Meredith is gearing up to have some sort of love story because Link and DeLuca are in it for the long run. May the best doctor win.
