On the latest episode of The Conners, fans got to witness exactly what the family was up to over the break — and as it turns out — Dan got injured. The damage wasn’t too bad but now the Conner family patriarch is in the midst of a legal dispute.
In “Rage Against The Machine”, the Conner family find themselves in quite the opportune position. Dan (John Goodman) suffered a minor injury while working a job for D.J. (Michael Fishman) and the shipping company he’s employed at — forcing him to deal with the legal complications that accompany workplace injuries.
It comes with pros and cons but Dan has to contemplate pursuing legal damages or keeping everything copacetic for DJ’s sake. The biggest concern in this episode of The Conners is the bills.
The bills pile up until Darlene (Sara Gilbert) convinces Dan to hire a lawyer. Darlene actually makes an appointment without telling her father, setting it up for that same day.
When the lawyer arrives, he introduces himself as Brian Foster (Peter Gallagher). He begins listening to Dan’s problems and then promises a massive settlement for his injuries. Dan merely wants his medical bills paid but Foster knows he can get more. Foster leaves with the Conner family, believing that they’re going to come out on top in this situation.
All of the Conners expect to have extra money in the pockets, requesting that Dan buy things for them. He does so willingly but he’s sorely disappointed when the lawyer returns with news.
Foster comes back with a poor demeanor on his face, foreshadowing the bad news. He informs Dan that the beverage company will fight the case in court. Foster shows him the counter offer and Dan begrudgingly agrees to it. Dan winds up with a few lawyer fees to pay but he at least gets his medical bills taken care of — and D.J. gets to keep his job.
Throughout the whole exchange, Dan’s main concern was getting D.J. fired. It was a potential consequence of seeking money over legal disputes with DJ’s employers so Dan second-guesses hiring a lawyer.
Ultimately, the situation ends with Dan Conner still owing money for legal fees but his reasonable demeanor ensured that D.J. would go back to work, without fear of being singled out.
