I don't think there has been a more anticipated video game than Grand Theft Auto VI in a very long time — and now, Netflix is coming to help Rockstar roll out a very unique way of showcasing it to the fans.
You might have heard about the special event that Netflix is hosting. According to Tudum, the streamer is going to give a special look into the world of the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series, specifically for subscribers. If you're wondering what the heck that entails, here are the details you need to know.
When does the special look happen?
If you're a Netflix subscriber and are interested in the special look, Rockstar Games will release Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Aug. 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET. The actual Grand Theft Auto VI game will be released on Nov. 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
What is this special look going to be?
This is the first time in ages that we've seen any new Grand Theft Auto content, and it's actually been 13 years since the last game was released. This is essentially the first real look at serious gameplay and a sense of what the story will be like.
The showcase will reveal a little more of the game, help future players get to know the main characters (Jason and Lucia), and take a deeper dive into what it's all about. The basic premise follows the couple who find themselves in the middle of a crime conspiracy in the "sunniest place in America." Now they have to make it through this craziness together.
Basically, it's GTA and the same kind of wackiness you would expect, but with a couple this time – which I'm down for. You can check out the trailer below:
Why is Netflix doing this?
Honestly, it's not that surprising. Netflix has been experimenting with different gaming formats over the last few years, and doing a special look at something like Grand Theft Auto is a big step for them. The VP of Nonfiction Series over at Netflix, Brandon Riegg, spoke about it to Tudum:
"Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we're honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It's a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience."
Netflix itself has never released a game that has taken the world by storm like Grand Theft Auto. They've created some popular mobile games on their app, but this is the first time they've partnered with a AAA gaming studio to promote a new game.
It's obviously also a big business move. Not only does it put Netflix on the map in the gaming world, but it's also a way to earn more Netflix subscribers even if only for a short time to check out the first look. I'm not sure if that first look will ever be available offline, so this is the only way for fans to see it. Either way, I don't blame the company for doing that.
That said, I'm curious to see how this all goes down and whether my Netflix account is worth this supposed special first look or if I should stick to these Netflix movies for fun. At the very least, it should get me excited for the game’s release in November.
