Virgin River star might have just revealed Mel and Jack's son's name

After Virgin River season 7 dropped on Netflix in February 2026, a new member of the close-knit community was born. Throughout the season, Mel and Jack navigated the tricky journey of becoming the adoptive parents of her patient Marley's baby. From beginning to end, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, never letting off our heartstrings once, and leaving us with a major cliffhanger.

Despite Marley and her boyfriend Eamon almost deciding to keep the baby, they eventually choose for Mel and Jack to adopt their son, knowing that they would give him a more stable life. Unfortunately, before he's born, they discover that the baby has a rare heart defect that requires immediate surgery following his delivery via c-section. The season ends rushing off to his procedure.

But that's not the only cliffhanger that Virgin River season 7 left behind regarding Mel and Jack's son. Sure, it's the biggest cliffhanger about the newborn baby that leads us into season 8, since we're left to worry about his health. In the emotional chaos of his birth, Mel and Jack didn't have a chance to reveal their son's name. Thankfully, Alexandra Breckenridge just gave fans a big hint.

Alexandra Breckenridge teases Mel and Jack's baby name

Until Virgin River season 8 arrives and reveals the new member of the Sheridan family's name, he's going to be known as "Mel and Jack's baby" or "Mel and Jack's son." However, in a recent interview with TV Line, Breckenridge offered a generous tease about what her on-screen son's name could be—and it might have been in front of our faces the entire time.

"You know, we do take things from the books sometimes. So I'll give you that as a hint," Breckenridge shared. In the Virgin River books written by Robyn Carr, Mel and Jack's son's name is revealed to be David in the novel Whispering Rock. Seemingly, Breckenridge is suggesting that the series will stay true to the source material and not change the couple's name. Still, you never know!

Breckenridge slightly backtracked on her tease, acknowledging that there's a possibility she spilled the beans on the baby's name or she just managed one heck of an epic misdirection to get fans' gears turning ahead of season 8: "I totally spoiled it. You know, maybe it's not! Maybe we don't go with that name." Hmmm... Did she spoil it or is she simply teasing fans?

If Mel and Jack don't choose David as their son's name, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the sentimental couple to pick a baby name that honors their family members. Mel met her birth father Everett and became close to him, and they could opt to name their son after Mel's dad, even if it's just his middle name. Don't forget, Doc's like another father to Mel, so Vernon could be in play, too.

The books also find Mel and Jack having a daughter named Emma, which the show could even save for a future season in the event that the couple's family grows with another adoption. Overall, we'll have to wait and see whether Breckenridge's tease is true and the series is sticking to the books when it comes to Mel and Jack's son's name. Season 8 can't come soon enough!
