For as long as anyone can remember, we haven't gone a single year without a show from Ryan Murphy on the air. Glee, American Horror Storry, 911, Monster, and plenty of other series from the prolific producer, writer, and director have provided audiences with envelope-pushing content we can't stop talking about. Netflix's The Watcher is among these conversation-starting series.
Back in October 2022, Netflix debuted the mystery horror series The Watcher, which comes from Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan. Based on The Cut article "The Haunting of a Dream House" by Reeves Wiedeman, the series stars Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannvale. Despite being intended as a miniseries, the show's viewership success resulted in Netflix picking up a second season.
The Watcher season 2 officially set to begin filming four years later
Since the renewal announcement in November 2022, progress on The Watcher season 2 has been minimal to non-existent, as Murphy himself stated in 2024 that he "didn't know" the status of the series. As fans began to doubt if a second season would actually come fruition, chatter throughout 2026 suggested that filming could begin this fall. Well, Netflix finally confirmed such chatter.
On Oct. 2, 2026, Netflix announced that The Watcher season 2 begins filming this fall in New York, though remained mum on what the season will be about. However, the streaming service also confirmed that Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Margo Martindale, and Isabel Gravitt are returning to the series, reprising their roles and crushing rumors that the series would be an anthology.

Watts, Cannavale, and Gravitt return as Nora, Dean, and Ellie Brannock respectively, while Martindale is back as their neighbor Maureen. The news that these four cast members will once again star in the series seems to suggest that we're heading back to their suburban community in New Jersey for another haunting, though it's unclear if any of their other neighbors will return.
Seeing as Richard Kind's character Mitch, the husband of Martindale's Maureen, died at the end of the first season, it's unlikely he will be back in the main cast. But fans are likely left to wonder about other main cast members Luke David Blumm, Mia Farrow, and especially Jennifer Coolidge. But we could also be in for plenty more casting announcements as production begins in the coming weeks.
Before Netflix formally announced The Watcher season 2, What's on Netflix reported that the new season would take on an anthology format and center on a college fraternity. Netflix's announcement contradicts that suspicion, though it's possible that the rumored castings for college-aged characters could still be part of season 2 if Ellie Brannock has aged up to her college years.
Excitement for The Watcher season 2 might have died down, but when the series first premiered, it attracted 125 million hours viewed in its first week and grew in its second week with 148 million hours viewed. It's not surprising that Netflix rolled the dice on another season, but it is surprising that it has taken this long to come to a fruition. Brennan's role as showrunner on Monster likely played a role.
As for when The Watcher season 2 will actually drop on Netflix, the streaming service didn't indicate a release window in its press release about production beginning this fall. But we can presume filming will continue through early 2027, which could mean season 2 could arrive by late 2027 or early 2028. There's still a long wait ahead, but at least there's actually something to look forward to now.
