The Empress season 3 officially has a release date for the show's final episodes

It's been two years since the German historical drama The Empress released its follow-up season on Netflix, and fans have been waiting with bated breath for news on the third season. Finally, the streaming service has revealed when we can see how the underrated series comes to an end.

Netflix first debuted The Empress back in September 2022, and the second season began streaming November 2024. Being so, the two-year gap between each season has been normal, but that doesn't mean fans have been any less impatient. But all that waiting will be rewarded this fall.

The Empress season 3 release date confirmed for November 2026

After almost exactly two years since the last season, The Empress season 3 begins streaming on Netflix on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026. Netflix announced the release date in a press release, which also offered some insight into what fans can expect from the final six episodes.

When we last left The Empress in season 2, Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu) and Franz's (Philip Froissant) marriage was immediately put under immense pressure as she was expected to produce a male heir for Franz and their country. The young couple also had to face a mounting war and dangerous political strife at the same time they experienced the loss of their child.

Picking back up in the third and final season, Franz returns home from war and their marriage is no less damaged than when he left. Franz is flooded with guilt from the war and other emotional ailments that lead him to cheat on Elisabeth, which again pushes their marriage into deeper conflict. Elisabeth's health leads her to escape from Vienna to an island, where she meets someone new.

In the press release announcing the release date, Netflix shared more of The Empress season 3 synopsis:

"By chance, the Empress meets the leader of the Hungarian revolution, Count Andrássy (Dejan Bućin), on her journey. Their encounter is immediately marked by strong intellectual and physical attraction. Almost simultaneously, Franz's brother Maximilian (Johannes Nussbaum) sets off on a great adventure with his wife Marie (Josephine Thiesen): He is to ascend the imperial throne in far-off Mexico. In the end, Elisabeth must decide: Follow her heart unconditionally, or be a sincere empress to her people."

It's going to be a captivating season that brings each of the character to reckon with their lives, their relationships, and their futures. The Empress season 3 leaves Elisabeth with a choice between two different futures, one of which involves leaving the life she knows behind for something new.

The Empress season 3 was once again overseen by showrunner Katharina Eyssen and includes a vast number of returning cast members on top of some new ones, including Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan, Johannes Nussbaum, Josephine Thiesen, Runa Greiner, Dejan Bućin, Marlene Burow, Christophe Favre, and Merlin Sandmeyer.
