The Duffer Brothers are back again on Netflix after the conclusion of Stranger Things and the horror series they produced Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen with their latest production The Boroughs. From creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the show's star-studded cast takes place in a seemingly picturesque retirement community that's soon turned upside down by an eerie secret.
Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Clark Peters, Denis O'Hare, and Geena Davis star as the group of unlikely heroes who come together to fight the mysterious and deadly creature that's feeding off The Boroughs residents and discover the dangerous history that's seeped into the fabric of this strange enterprise and its CEO. You could say that stranger things are happening.
Throughout The Boroughs season 1, Sam (Molina) and his friends slowly piece together the inexplicable science fiction story that's playing out in their own neighborhood following a friend's untimely death. Between learning about the Mother, Blaine's mission for The Boroughs, and the magic that's holding it together, the ending provides closure but teases season 2.
Warning: Spoilers ahead from The Boroughs season 1 finale!

Blaine's fatal end and Sam's glitch after Mother's death
By the end of The Boroughs season 1 episode 8, all of our questions have been answered, as complicated and slightly confusing as they might be. Sam and his friends believe the way to end Blaine's control over the residents and the horror he has been enacting for years is to kill Mother. They go back and forth on keeping her alive or killing her to end the cycle, but when Mother asks to die and be reunited with her children, she's taken to the cave where she originated.
Judy nearly dies during a struggle with Blaine and Anneliese, though Mother cures her wounds and brings her back to life before leaving for the cave. Renee and Paz convince a defeated Hank to help free the children creatures to reunite with Mother. Once Sam and Mother are in the cave, Blaine tracks them down after not being killed by the particle accelerator. But when Mother reunites with her children and explodes, Blaine finally dies and this curse has been broken.
However, this isn't the happily ever after that you might assume the ending to be. After some time has elapsed from their battle, the whole group celebrates with a party at Sam's house. He's still dealing with a head wound he sustained during the fight, and as he replaces his gauze bandage, Sam's shown glitching in the bathroom mirror. Clearly, some bit of the magic Blaine used from Mother remains in The Boroughs and opens the door for a new twist to continue the story.

The Boroughs season 2 could happen as creators tease three-season plan
As of The Boroughs' release on Netflix on May 21, Netflix has not indicated whether the show will be renewed for another season or if it's the kind of show that's simply one-and-done. The ending of the first season works both as a series and season finale. While some might not see Sam's glitch as a fitting ending, it's the kind of open-ended conclusion that teases that this community will always have something odd happening, even if the original evil has been defeated.
But the scene with Sam glitching also works as the perfect lead-in for a possible second season. Why is he glitching? Is he still real, or has he been impacted by the magic? What would that mean for Sam now that Mother has died? These are all questions that could be the starting point for The Boroughs season 2, though with Blaine and Anneliese dead, the show would need a new villain. Surely, the retirement community would need new ownership, but could it really be reformed?
There's no doubt that the creators and writers could dream up fresh storylines that further expands the show's already rich mythology. Addiss spoke with ScreenRant and confirmed that he and Matthews have a three-season plan in mind for this story that they would begin tackling in the event of a season 2 renewal. Netflix will keep a close watch on the viewership numbers, completion rate, and other factors before announcing the show's fate in the coming weeks.
