Stranger Things star Sadie Sink makes box office history with her newest movie

Ever since Stranger Things came to an end with its fifth season last year, all eyes have been on the cast and the next moves they will be making. Whether it's focusing on a music career, starring in movies, or returning to Netflix in a new original series, the Stranger Things cast have continued to thrive outside of Hawkins, including rising star Sadie Sink.

In case you hadn't heard, and haven't been theorizing with the rest of the world, Sadie Sink stars in a little movie called Spider-Man: Brand New Day. For much of the summer, the character Sink plays has been kept under wraps as not spoil a huge progression in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans quickly proved how much they needed to see the saga's next chapter.

Sadie Sink stars in the biggest domestic opening weekend movie debut

Leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, projections were betting big on the fourth entry in the Tom Holland series posting Avengers: Endgame numbers, and the movie really did. Brand New Day opened with $360 million in North America, becoming the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, behind Endgame's $357.1 million in 2019.

Additionally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day kept its historic opening weekend rolling with a global total of $932 million, almost surpassing the $1 billion milestone after less than a week. The film's opening weekend worldwide gross places it in second place of all time behind Avengers: Endgame's launch of $1.2 billion. Keep in mind, the movie's still just getting started.

The mystery surrounding Sink's role no doubt played some kind of factor in the rush to see the movie in its opening weekend, though obviously, MCU and Spider-Man fans weren't wasting time to see firsthand what happened after the emotional and shocking ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home. All told, the movie had the perfect storm of intrigue to ensure fans headed to the box office.

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day shattered box office records with its opening weekend, the movie also undeniably became the biggest movie of Sink's still growing career. Stranger Things fans know and love her as Max Mayfield, appearing in four out of the Netflix phenomenon's five seasons, but Sink hasn't starred in too many major big-screen hits. After Brand New Day, Sink's second-biggest film gross is the 2022 A24 drama The Whale's $57.6 global gross.

If you haven't seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day quite yet and have managed to avoid spoilers, look away now. Months of speculation and rumors led to the reveal that Sink plays the iconic X-Men character Jean Grey. The film tracks the character's origin story, and rather than leading into Avengers: Doomsday, it's likely Sink will be one of the leads of the forthcoming MCU X-Men film.

Speaking of Avengers: Doomsday, it's almost guaranteed to completely smash box office records with its own debut in theaters in December 2026, but nothing can take away Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the history it made, both for the box office and Sink's career. Netflix fans will get a chance to watch the history-making movie either later this year or in early 2027 per the streamer's deal with Sony. How fitting that Sink's biggest movie will stream where she had her breakthrough.
