It hasn't even been a full month since Stranger Things came to an end with its emotional and much discussed series finale after nearly a decade of dominating Netflix. Naturally, we're still consumed with all things Stranger Things and continuing to dissect the final episodes and following the stars to whatever they do next, whether its music, Saturday Night Live, or Broadway.
But some of us might also be at the point of our Stranger Things mourning where we're reaching back into the archives of the stars' filmographies and watching everything they have ever been. We've all been there, right? Well, if you're currently in the midst of watching Jamie Campbell Bower's filmography, one of the Vecna actor's most bizarre fantasy movies will soon leave Netflix.
The 2013 young adult fantasy movie The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones has been available to stream on Netflix in the United States. However, the movie will be removed from the streaming service after Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026. Time is running out to watch Bower in the underrated cult favorite, which also features another beloved Netflix star.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones leaves Netflix in January 2026
Based on The Mortal Instruments book series by Cassandra Clare, The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones stars Emily in Paris star Lily Collins as Clary Fray, an average teenager in New York City who discovers that she's descended from Shadowhunters. They are a group of half-angel warriors tasked with protecting the world from evil forces. However, she isn't able to protect her mother.
Clary's mother goes missing, which prompts her to team up with other Shadowhunters and venture into the Downworld. Fighting off various demons and monsters, Clary and the group work to keep their hands on an ancient cup that's an important emblem for her mother's future. It's the kind of movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, exactly like the page-turning book series.
In addition to Collins and Bower, who were in an on-again, off-again relationship after meeting on the movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones includes a number of other stars you will recognize from various Netflix shows. Robert Sheehan starred in The Umbrella Academy, Lena Headey led The Abandons, Kevin Durand appeared in Locke & Key, and Aidan Turner recurred in The Diplomat season 3. Take a closer look at the movie's full cast:
- Lily Collins as Clary
- Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace
- Robert Sheehan as Simon
- Kevin Zegers as Alec
- Lena Headey as Jocelyn
- Kevin Durand as Pangborn
- Aidan Turner as Luke
- Jemima West as Isabelle
- Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane
- CCH Pounder as Dorothea
- Jared Harris as Hodge
- Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine
Unfortunately, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones wasn't a box office hit during its release. Surely hoping to attain the level of young adult book-to-screen success that the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, and even Divergent had been enjoying, the film fell short. The movie brought in just over $95 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.
Combined with its negative reception from critics (the movie holds a crumby 13% score on Rotten Tomatoes), that wasn't enough to justify the planned sequel based on the book City of Ashes. But even though its fate was cut short thanks to bad reviews and low demand, there's no denying that The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is an underrated 2010s gem worth watching!
Don't miss the movie on Netflix before it's removed on Jan. 31, 2026.
