Isla Gordon and the Los Angeles Waves simply can't be beat! Netflix's hit basketball comedy series Running Point continues to pull in incredible viewership numbers with the release of its highly anticipated second season in April 2026. The new season has helped to further cement the comedy from Mindy Kaling and starring Kate Hudson as a new Netflix classic with a bright future.

Netflix unveiled its viewership numbers for the week of April 27-May, 3, 2026, the first full viewership tracking week for Running Point season 2, and the series increased its ratings compared to its opening weekend. In its second week of release, the second season attracted 6.7 million views, which translates to 32 million hours viewed. That's a minor but meaningful jump from week 1.

During its opening weekend, Running Point season 2 landed 5.3 million views, which evens out to 25.2 million hours viewed. While those numbers might seem like they are on the smaller side, they are nothing to sneeze at for a Netflix original comedy series. Additionally, the first season made its way onto the Global Top 10 in season 2's second week at No. 7 with 2.5 million views.

Running Point season 3 should be a lock for renewal on Netflix

All of this viewership success is adding up to Netflix having a no brainer decision on its hands when it comes to renewing Running Point season 3. For its first two weeks, the second season has netted a combined 12 million views and 57.2 million hours viewed, which is a far more sizable return than some of Netflix's other recent comedy outings like Big Mistakes and the renewed A Man on the Inside.

As Deadline notes, Running Point season 2's opening weekend numbers of 5.3 million views marks a very apparent decline compared to the first season's debut last year with 9.3 million views. On paper, that looks like a massive gulf (and it might be at 43%), but it's honestly a recent trend of popular Netflix shows declining in ratings that shouldn't be blamed on Running Point.

Aside from its global performance, Running Point has been a strong player on the United States Top 10 most popular shows ranking. The comedy debut in the peak position the day after its season 2 premiere, and as of May 5, Running Point remains in the Top 10 at the No. 7 position, only dipping from the Top 5 after new releases dropped during the first weekend in May.

While some might see the ratings decline between seasons 1 and 2 as a call for concern about a third season 3, I'm personally not worried about the show's future. I would be completely shocked if Netflix opted to cancel the series rather than renew Running Point season 3. Given the streamer's relationship with Kaling, the show's star power, and its popularity, the Waves should be back.
