Why Sweet Tooth is ending after season 3 (and season 4 isn't happening)
While we're happy that Sweet Tooth season 3 is now streaming on Netflix, we can't help but feel sad that this is the final season of the fantasy drama series. The streaming giant announced this news in May 2023, a month after the second season dropped.
Sweet Tooth premiered on Netflix in June 2021 and was an instant hit. Due to its success on the streaming platform, Netflix announced the show's season 2 renewal only a month later. But unfortunately, it took almost two years for the second season to come out due to a lengthy production process.
Sweet Tooth season 2 finally premiered in April 2023, and once again, it was another great season. Luckily, we didn't have to worry about a season 3 renewal since Netflix quickly renewed the show for a third season only a month later. However, we weren't expecting the renewal to come with the announcement that the show would be coming to an end. We thought the fantasy drama would consist of at least four seasons before wrapping up. But sadly, that's not the case.
So, why is Sweet Tooth ending after three seasons? Well, it looks like it was the creator's decision, not Netflix's. With most of the storylines from the comics having been covered on the show already, the creator thought that the third season would be the right time to wrap up the series. Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Jim Mickle spoke with Variety back in May 2023 and basically shared that he felt the story had finally reached its conclusion. So, ending it with a third season made the most sense.
"In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going."
- Jim Mickle
"Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2."
- Jim Mickle
While it sucks that we won't be seeing Gus, the other hybrids, and Jepperd on our screens anymore, we're just happy that we got to see their stories wrapped up. Many shows nowadays don't get the opportunity to go on for additional seasons, with them being canceled after only one season. Regardless of Sweet Tooth coming to an end, it will still remain one of the best fantasy dramas on Netflix.
