By Reed Gaudens
The first Tyler Perry series under his overall deal with Netflix officially has a release date! On Sept. 12, Netflix announced that Perry's debut series with the streamer, Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black, will be released on Thursday, Oct. 24. Along with the release date announcement, the streamer also dropped the first teaser trailer for the show, and it's sure to be one of fall's biggest hits!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beauty in Black's release date on Oct. 24 will be the first of a two-part drop for the series. Now, fans have definitely soured on Netflix's recent tendency to split the releases of show into two parts, but there's good news here before you get too worked up. The first season of Beauty in Black contains 16 episodes, which means part 1 will likely have eight episodes.
On top of the extended episode count for Beauty in Black, it's also an hour-long drama series, so you don't have to worry about burning through eight 30-minute episodes in the blink of an eye. It's still a decent sized binge-watch, and based on recent trends for two-part releases, the release of part 2 could arrive as early as one month later. But Netflix hasn't announced a part 2 release date yet.
Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black centers its story on two women who couldn't have more different circumstances. Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) has been kicked out by her mother and isn't having the easiest time standing on her own two feet, while Mallory (Crystle Stewart) is a businesswoman leading a thriving company. Soon, Kimmie and Mallory's worlds collide.
Here's the official premise of the series via Netflix:
"Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black follows two women leading very different lives. While Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out, and Mallory is running a successful business, they find themselves entangled in each other’s lives."
Along with the release date, Netflix also offered fans a glimpse at what to expect from the series, and there's plenty of sexy and scandalous twists and turns to come that will have viewers on the edge of their seats.
There are few lines of dialogue spoken in the teaser, but one of them offers some of the most intrigue over the thrilling visual teases: "Beautiful and deadly." Mallory then ends the teaser with this chilling line before shocking cuts to an ambulance and a car speeding toward someone: "Beauty in black, baby."
The series also boasts a stacked and extensive ensemble cast, which is a staple of most Tyler Perry productions, whether on the big or small screen. Here's who joins Williams and Stewart in Beauty in Black:
- Amber Reign Smith as Rain
- Ricco Ross as Horace
- Debbi Morgan as Olivia
- Richard Lawson as Norman
- Steven G. Norfleet as Charles
- Julian Horton as Roy
- Terrell Carter as Varney
- Shannon Wallace as Calvin
- Bryan Tanaka as Officer Alex
- Joy Rovaris as Gillian
- Xavier Smalls as Angel
- Charles Malik Whitfield as Jules
- Tamera “Tee” Kissen as Body
- Ursula O. Robinson as Delinda
- Ashley Versher as Lena
- George Middlebrook as Officer Trackson.
While this will mark Perry's first series collaboration with Netflix, of surely many to come, the prolific actor, producer, writer, and director has enjoyed several hits with the streamer. He appeared in the 2021 Netflix movie Don't Look Up and has released three original directorial films on the platform: A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman's Blues, and 2024's steamy hit Mea Culpa. His next Netflix original movie, The Six Triple Eight, releases on Dec. 20, and Madea's Destination Wedding will likely release next year.
